The signals a disposal gives
A garbage disposal is refreshingly honest about what is wrong with it. A unit that hums but will not turn is jammed, the motor has power but the grinding plate is stuck, and forcing it by flipping the switch repeatedly just burns out the motor. A disposal that is completely silent and dead has usually tripped its reset button or lost power at the switch or breaker. And a disposal that leaks is failing at a seal, or, if it leaks from the bottom, has a cracked internal housing.
Learning to read those three signals saves you the cost of a new unit when a reset would have done it. The humming-jam and the tripped-reset cases in particular are usually simple fixes, not replacements, which is why it is worth checking before assuming the worst. Only the cracked-housing leak reliably means the unit is genuinely done, and even that is worth confirming rather than guessing.
Before you call the disposal dead
- Hums but won't spin: it's jammed, do NOT keep flipping the switch.
- Completely dead: press the red reset button on the underside first.
- Still jammed: turn it off, then use the hex-key slot to free it by hand.
- Leaks from the top: usually the sink flange seal, repairable.
- Leaks from the bottom: a cracked housing, time to replace.
- Sink backs up with a working disposal: it's the drain, not the unit.
What you can safely check yourself
A couple of checks are safe and often solve it. If the unit is dead, look under it for the small red reset button and press it, that alone revives many "dead" disposals. If it is humming and jammed, turn it OFF at the switch first, then some units have a hex-key slot on the bottom you can turn to free the jam manually (never put your hand in the disposal). These are the manufacturer-intended fixes, not risky hacks.
What is not worth doing is repeatedly flipping the switch on a humming unit, which cooks the motor, or reaching into the chamber. If the reset and the manual turn do not free it, or if it leaks, that is the point to call rather than escalate. A jammed unit freed promptly usually goes right back to work; a jammed unit that has been switch-cycled for ten minutes may now genuinely need replacing, which is avoidable.
When the real problem is the drain
Here is the thing many people miss: a lot of "disposal problems" are actually drain problems. A disposal ties into the kitchen drain, and in most homes the dishwasher drains through it, so a clog downstream or a missing dishwasher high loop shows up as a sink that will not drain and a dishwasher full of dirty water, even though the disposal itself is fine.
So if your disposal runs but the sink still backs up, or the dishwasher backs up into the sink, the fix is usually in the drain line, not the unit. Grease is the usual culprit downstream, and no working disposal makes the drain immune to the fats and oils that clog it. Replacing a perfectly good disposal when the real problem is a greased-up drain arm is a common, avoidable mistake, which is why diagnosing the drain first matters.
Choosing a replacement, when it is genuinely time
When a disposal is truly done, cracked housing, a seized motor after years of use, sizing it is less about horsepower than people think. A well-insulated three-quarter horsepower unit with stainless components will out-perform and out-last a loud, cheap one-horsepower model for a normal household, so we size to your kitchen rather than to the biggest number on the box.
The install matters as much as the unit. The dishwasher drain needs a proper high loop or air gap so wastewater cannot siphon back into the machine, the discharge has to tie into a correctly trapped and vented drain, and the electrical, hardwired or a switched outlet, has to be right. Batch-feed models, which only run with a stopper in place, are also worth considering in a home with young children, since they cannot run with anything reaching into the chamber. Done right, the whole sink works, not just the new disposal.
A maintenance note that prevents a lot of jams: run cold water before, during and for a few seconds after you use the disposal, feed it gradually rather than packing it full, and avoid the things that reliably jam or dull it, fibrous items like celery and corn husks, starchy peels, and bones. Grinding a citrus peel now and then helps with odor. None of this is about babying the unit; it is just the difference between a disposal that runs for a decade and one that jams every few months and gets blamed for it.

The usual culprit is the dishwasher's high loop. Its drain hose is meant to rise up under the counter before dropping to the disposal, and if that loop has slipped down or was never set, wastewater siphons the wrong way into the machine. Re-establishing the loop, or clearing a blockage right where the hose meets the disposal, resolves it.
That is usually a drain problem, not the disposal, most often grease built up in the drain arm downstream. Replacing a working disposal will not fix it; clearing the drain will. We diagnose the line rather than blaming the unit.
